Tackling a major global problem: energy poverty

We are transforming lives and unlocking potential through access to energy and other utilities worldwide. To date, we have positively impacted over one million lives and helped to make progress on a host of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Impactpage

We recognise that electricity is the entry point to other utilities and value-added services that would never have been possible without the prerequisite of electricity. Energy provision creates demand in other areas – such as gas, water, internet and finance – a demand which we also seek to meet.

Urgency is required to meet the UN’s SDG global targets for 2030. As a leading next generation utility, we directly contribute to SGD 7 – ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

When our customers switch from kerosene and other fuels to clean energy, this also brings average annual savings of $200 per household. Off-grid solar is not only cheaper for customers than kerosene and traditional fuel alternatives, but also has the added benefits of being safer, healthier, more reliable and better for the environment.

Additionally, the systems are available on a pay-as-you-go basis via mobile money, which is best suited to individuals from low income backgrounds as they only pay for what they use. Bboxx has also worked with governments to launch the roll out of subsidies.

Energy access is the entry point to solving a host of global goals. We directly contribute to 10 of the 17 UN’s SDG. Here are just a few of the ways:

  • Electricity enables local businesses to take off and catalyzes enterprise as the key to unlocking economic growth at scale (SDG 8). To date, we have enabled 35,105 people to support an enterprise, and $78,846,917 additional income has been generated as a result of our products.
  • By combating energy poverty, we are tackling poverty in all its forms and reducing inequalities (SDG 10). We develop products that serve all individuals and households at all economic levels and we have partnered with Governments to roll out the use of subsidies in order to broaden energy access.
  • We have worked with Governments and corporates alike to power sustainable communities and cities (SDG 11). This is driven by the firm belief that electricity is the foundation for modern life and the trigger for economic growth.
